Benedictine University is dedicated to the education of undergraduate and graduate students from diverse ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. Founded in Chicago as St. Procopius College by the Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey in 1887. The College moved to Lisle in 1901 occupying the former Benedictine Hall in 1901 until new buildings were added in the 1920s. The College became coeducational in 1968 and was renamed Illinois Benedictine College in 1971. In response to community needs, the College added graduate, doctorate and adult learner programs. The College became Benedictine University in 1996 and remains committed to providing a quality, Catholic, liberal education for men and women.

Benedictine University is set on a rolling, tree-covered 108-acre campus of 10 major buildings with air-conditioned classrooms and modern, well-equipped laboratories. A student athletic center features three full-size basketball courts, a competition-size swimming pool, three tennis courts and training facilities. All of the residence halls are comfortable, spacious and have access to the Internet. Other features include a scenic campus pond and a student center with dining halls, a game room, lounges, bookstore and meeting rooms.
Benedictine University has partnered with the Village of Lisle to build a multi-million dollar sports complex on campus. The Sports Complex at Benedictine University in Lisle will feature a 3,000-seat lighted football stadium encircled by a nine-lane track, a lighted baseball stadium with seating for 750, a lighted softball field, two practice fields and other amenities.
Residence options include Founders' Woods, which allows students to experience the privacy and relaxation of apartment living while enjoying the advantages of a campus environment.
US News & World Report's 2004 rankings list Benedictine University as one of the top universities in the Midwest. The magazine also ranks the school one of the top six in the region for Campus Diversity.
LOCATION
Benedictine University is 25 miles west of Chicago and is easily accessible from the city and suburbs. Lisle is served by the Burlington Northern railroad, and O'Hare International Airport is only 30 minutes away. In addition to the Chicago metropolitan area's many social and cultural offerings, the University enjoys the proximity and use of Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the Morton Arboretum, a ski hill, riding stable and several golf courses. The University's location in the high-tech East-West Tollway corridor provides students with extensive opportunities for internships and employment.
ACADEMIC FACILITIES
The Kindlon Hall of Learning and the Birck Hall of Science, which opened in Fall 2001, bring education to a new level. Birck Hall features 45,000 square feet of learning space, 34 science laboratories, 15 individual research laboratories, fully networked classrooms and the Jurica Nature Museum. Kindlon Hall houses academic offices, classrooms and the University Library, home to 180,000 processed volumes. The library is a member of LIBRAS, a cooperative organization of 18 college libraries in the Chicago area that makes available more than 2 million volumes and 4,500 periodical titles. Through ILCSO (Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization), the Library has access to approximately 20 million items from other Illinois libraries. Benedictine University also has distance education classrooms that allow students to interact with other colleges and universities in a classroom setting.
COST
The cost of undergraduate tuition for the 2004-05 academic year is $17,800. The average cost of room and board is $6,393. Mandatory fees include an $80 health fee, a $300 technology fee and a $130 student activity fee. Graduate tuition is $600 per semester hour and $430 per quarter hour.
ACCREDITATION
Benedictine University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the Illinois State Board of Education Teacher Certification Section and the National League for Nursing.
SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Academically gifted students are challenged by special sections of core classes and the opportunity for independent study.
STUDY ABROAD
Students can earn academic credit, perfect their language skills, alter their world perspective and intern in foreign countries.
TECHNOLOGY
Benedictine integrates computer technology and Internet access in courses ranging from accounting to biochemistry. All students have e-mail addresses and access to the Internet from their residence hall rooms and computer stations throughout campus. Equipment in state-of-the-art science laboratories is available for undergraduate use.
SAFETY
Benedictine University provides a safe environment for learning and socializing. Secure residence halls, adjacent parking lots, lighted paths and emergency call boxes complement the efforts of 24-hour public safety officers.
