Lehman College

New York Govenor Herbert H. Lehman, for whom the college was named, was known for his honesty and integrity in public service.
HISTORY: Founded in 1931 as the Bronx campus of Hunter College. Established in 1968 as an independent college of The City University of New York and named for Herbert H. Lehman, the great New York Governor, U.S. Senator, philanthropist, and humanitarian. During World War II, Lehman's campus became the main national training site for women in the military. For six months in 1946, the campus served as interim headquarters for the newly formed United Nations.
TYPE OF COLLEGE: Public, comprehensive, coeducational liberal arts college with more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and specializations.
ENROLLMENT: 10,761 including 8,570 undergraduate students and 2,191 graduate students of whom 72% are female and 28% are male (Fall 2005). Students come from more than 90 countries around the world.
CAMPUS: A 37-acre tree-lined campus noted for its distinctive blend of Collegiate Gothic and modern architecture; 15 buildings include a Center for the Performing Arts, Art Gallery, and APEX, a world-class facility for sports and recreation.
LOCATION: Along the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bedford Park-Kingsbridge neighborhoods in the northwest Bronx. Near public transportation (No. 4 and D trains) and Bronx buses. Ample on-campus parking in secured lots.
FACULTY: 337 full-time of whom 85% hold PhD degrees. Six Distinguished Professors.

DEGREES OFFERED: BA, BS, BBA, BFA, BA/MA, MA, MS, MSW, MS Ed, MAT, MFA. In association with the New York Botanical Garden, a plant sciences concentration in the City University's doctoral program in biology is based at Lehman.
ACCREDITATION: Board of Regents, University of the State of New York; Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools; Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; Association of University Programs in Health Administration; American Chemical Society; Professional State Accreditation in Teaching; the National League for Nursing; American Speech Language Hearing Association; National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education; and the Council on Social Work Education.
FINANCIAL AID: 75-80 percent of students receive financial assistance. Scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment are available for eligible students.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR: Fourteen-week semesters in the fall and spring; two six-week summer sessions.
LIBRARY: Open stacks collection of 713,500 volumes supplemented by 572,000 microforms. The Library subscribes to 1,535 periodicals and over 13,000 electronic journals. It is a designated depository for government documents. Fully automated CUNY-wide book catalog, circulation system, periodical indexes, electronic full-text databases, and Internet access. CD ROMs and LANs.
COMPUTER AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES: The Department of Information Technology Resources (ITR) provides access to computing and related technologies in support of the College's instructional, research, and administrative activities. Located on the plaza level of Carman Hall, the facility houses nine microcomputer classrooms, an open lab area with over 100 microcomputers, printing facilities, a help desk, a small auditorium, and a faculty development lab.

INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS: Women's basketball, cross country, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor track, volleyball, cheerleading. Men's baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor track, outdoor track, volleyball, water polo, cheerleading.
ATHLETIC CONFERENCES: NCAA, CUNY Athletic Conference, ECAC, Hudson Valley Men's/Women's Athletic Conferences, Knickerbocker Athletic Conference, Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Conference, Metropolitan Intercollegiate Men's Volleyball Conference, and the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Conference. All sports are NCAA Division III.
