Founded in 1831 and chartered in 1818, The University of Alabama is the state’s flagship university with an aggressive plan for growth and academic achievement recognized throughout the academy today. The University of Alabama is one of the top 50 public universities and is a leader in the enrollment of National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars. The student body is the most accomplished in the University’s 175-year history. The University of Alabama is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In athletics, UA competes in the nation’s premiere league, the Southeastern Conference, with nine men’s and 12 women’s sports.
Football is the oldest varsity sport at the university dating back to 1892. Tradition-rich University of Alabama football includes 21 SEC titles and 12 national championships.

The University’s library resources include the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library at the heart of the institution’s 1,000-acre campus, five separate discipline-related libraries and a special collections library. The total library system holds some 2.5 million cataloged items and over 4 million microform units.
