Westchester Community College

Valhalla, NY

The scope of Westchester Community College goes well beyond that of a typical community college. In addition to providing outstanding educational resources, it also serves as a base for the county's cultural and intellectual interests, ranging from the presentation of dozens of entertaining special events including an annual President's Forum (recent guests have included Bill Clinton, Al Franken, and Daniel Henninger, deputy editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page) and an international film series, to Celebrity Salons featuring some of the top names in politics, journalism, and the arts.
From the outset, Westchester Community College has been committed to education leading to local jobs in support of local businesses and to transfer to four-year institutions. In 1946, the college, then based in White Plains, opened to returning GI's seeking workplace skills. Two years later, The Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences (the college's original name) began its affiliation with the State University of New York system. In 1957, Westchester Community College moved to its current flagship location on 218 acres located at 75 Grasslands Road in Valhalla, just north of White Plains, New York.
More than sixty years ago, some of the college's first students were enrolled in Building Construction and Mechanical Technology. There are now over fifty majors in Business, Engineering Science and Technologies, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Health and Laboratory Sciences, and Human, public, and Food Services. The college offers credit classes leading to associate degrees and certificates, in addition to hundreds of non- credit classes, many leading to professional certifications.
Although it had a modest beginning, Westchester Community College is now the largest college in the county, with more than 24,000 students. In addition to state-of-the-art computer labs on the main campus in Valhalla, the college offers cutting edge facilities at extension centers. These centers include Ossining (healthcare courses), Peekskill (computer, multimedia), Yonkers (computers, general education), Mount Vernon (business, culinary arts), and White Plains (art, multimedia).

In addition to boasting the most affordable tuition in the county, the college also offers a host of reasonably priced services for its business partners. The Professional Development Center provides tailor-made training and education for small and large companies ranging from a small electronics firm to Verizon. More than 100 companies have benefited from training in computers, office skills, Telecommunications, Total Quality Management, and English as a Second Language.
Other aspects of the college include an Honors Program, the Mainstream Program for mature adults, and an ESL Program which attracts more than 5,000 students annually.
