Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Demonstrated interest in international education. Candidates must have good interpersonal, advising and communication skills. Per federal regulations, applicant must be able to demonstrate US citizenship or lawful permanent residency. Highly qualified candidates should have 1-2 years of experience in higher education student services or previous experience working with students with F-1 and J-1 visas.

Principal duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of International Student Services and working in a team of five advisors, the major responsibilities are to:

Provide a welcoming and supportive environment for international students at UW-Madison.

40% Advise and orient international students and campus community on F-1/J -1 procedures/responsibilities and cultural adjustment. Provide orientation and advice to F-1/J-1 visa holders and their families. Provide individual consultations through walk in advising, phone and e mail. Prepare written information for the ISS electronic newsletters and the ISS website. Prepare and deliver workshops on F visa/J-visa and other immigration and adjustment related issues as well as on intercultural communication. Collaborate with and provide back-up support to the other international student advisors.

30% Review and assist in processing F-1/J-1 documentation. Provide information and advice about F-1 and J-1 status. Provide assistance in interpretation of rights and responsibilities, and advice concerning appropriate document requests and changes. Develop and implement workshops and other training. Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the UW-Madison F 1 program. Determine eligibility and authorize issuance of immigration documents. Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officers (ARO) for the J 1 program. Provide UW electronic communication through SEVIS as required by regulation.

20 % Implement and assist in development of campus activities for and involving international students. Interact with other campus services serving international students. Attend activities involving international students. Serve on committees planning international student events; assist in planning and implementation of such events. Assist in preparation of ISS publicity, newsletters, ISS web site and other program-related materials.

5% Office and Divisional Standards

Serve as a role model to ensure individuals working in and requesting assistance from the office are treated with respect and civility.
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
Advance the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the Division through day-to-day responsibilities and special projects.
Represent the Division via campus committees, initiatives and events as requested.

5% Other duties as assigned.
