The University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for a tenure-track position in Creative
Writing at the Assistant Professor level beginning in Fall 2010. The appointment carries a 3-3
teaching load divided between undergraduate and M.A. courses in Creative Writing and introductory
and/or advanced courses in a second field. Expertise in fiction or narrative forms preferred.
Desirable secondary areas include a literary area (including American literature before 1900,
British before 1800, Queer Theory, Feminist Theory, or Genre Studies, esp. in drama), pedagogy in
English Studies, Digital Humanities (esp. in conjunction with a literary or writing area), or
Composition/Rhetoric (esp. in postcolonial rhetoric or the rhetoric of gender, race, and class). The
English Department includes courses in literature, linguistics, composition and rhetoric, and
English Education.
The University of Michigan - Flint is a regional campus of the University of Michigan with an enrollment of over 7,800 students situated in modern facilities on a forty-two acre riverfront site in downtown Flint. The population is a mixture of traditional and non-traditional students. UM-Flint offers day, evening, and online classes, and faculty members are expected to teach in those modes.
We seek an individual committed to teaching and curricular development at the undergraduate and Master's level, creative and/or scholarly publication, university and community service. On-campus interviews will likely be conducted in February 2010. Review of applications will begin January 4 and continue until the position is filled.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in English with specialization in Creative Writing, demonstrated teaching ability, and evidence of creative and (if appropriate) scholarly potential. The ideal candidate will have significant creative publications in his or her chosen genre(s). Faculty members are expected to maintain a balanced record of excellence in teaching, creative/research work with publication, and service.
