Description
The Department of Computer Science seeks candidates for a full-time faculty position with lab manager duties. Responsibilities begin mid-August 2010. Academic rank and compensation will be based on degrees and experience. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
The Department of Computer Science is composed of four full-time faculty, additional adjunct faculty, and is supported by a staff of one full-time employees. There are over 40 students seeking degrees in two majors: Computer Science and Computer Information System.
This position is half-time teaching and half-time lab support. Teaching load of 12 units per academic year is required. Working under the general direction of the Chairman of the Computer Science Department, this employee provides technical support for instructional and research programs in Computer Science. This support includes support of department computers and other hardware, software, networks and other resources and/or systems, which in turn support the computer science curriculum. The functions of this position include a major role in the selection, procurement, installation, maintenance and configuration of departmental computer hardware and software in labs and classrooms and the provision of technical assistance to both faculty and students engaged in the use of this equipment. Position subject to final funding.
Responsibilities
* Prepare and teach lower-division CS/CIS courses up to 6 units per semester (half-time)
* Lab Manager duties half-time
* Conduct research involving undergraduate students.
* Participate in mentoring and academic advising of undergraduate students.
* Participate in department and university affairs.
* Maintains and supports workstations, printers and their equipment in department labs, classrooms and offices.
* Trains and oversees student lab assistants.
* Manages the department software resources. This includes the procurement, installation configuration and maintenance of department software to keep it current.
* Monitors software licenses and purchase records, maintenance of up-to-date documentation and libraries, monitoring department conformity to license regulations, and advising faculty of relevant software developments.
* Installs and configures new hardware in Computer Science labs and classrooms.
* Maintains servers, timesharing systems and networks operated by the Computer Science Department.
* Oversees operation of computer labs and work with IMT for network operations.
* Provides support, as needed to faculty and lab assistants in use of computing facilities.
* Assists students and faculty with their computer facilities needs and concerns so as to be able to research, propose and implement improvements.
* Performs other duties as assigned by the Chairman.

Qualifications
* An earned master degree in computer science or computer information system
* A commitment to teaching excellence in an undergraduate, liberal arts program
* A willingness to support the lab in an undergraduate setting
* A demonstrated, vibrant Christian faith compatible with the mission of Azusa Pacific University (Faculty members are required to sign a "Statement of Faith," available at http://www.apu.edu/about/believe and to adhere to the policies outlined in the Faculty Handbook.)
Experience
* Evidence of teaching excellence desired
* Desire to mentor undergraduate students in their course work, research, and personal lives
* Interest and commitment to the integration of faith with the discipline
* Two to three years experience in a related field requiring possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the needed lab tasks.
* Skills: Strong telecommunication and networking expertise including network management skills (Novell Netware, TCP/IP, NFS & NT, Windows required). UNIX system management skills (Sun Solaris preferred). End user support expertise (Sun, PC, and Mac). Expert in multiplicity of popular software application packages (including PC and Mac). Skill in programming languages and compilers including C-language and C++. Computer systems troubleshooting skills. Broad computer hardware expertise. Good communication skills. Valid California driver's license.
* Mental Skills: Ability to work independently with initiative and good judgment. Strong organizational skills, able to meet deadlines. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
* Physical Skills: Physical strength and endurance sufficient to frequently transport computer systems from one site to another. Hear and speak on the telephone. Able to carry, push, stop, repetitively bend, reach over head, use fingers, wrists and/or hands. Able to lift up to 75 lbs.
* Visual Demands: Computer monitor and reading, judge quality of work.
