Position: Assistant Professor of United States History (tenure track)

Position Description:
Each semester this faculty member will teach either three sections of a U.S. history survey and an advanced undergraduate course in U.S. environmental history or two sections of a U.S. history survey, a survey-level global/comparative environmental history course, and one upper level U.S. environmental history.  Average enrollment for each section of the survey is 45 students; enrollment in the advanced courses ranges from 18 to 30. History faculty members maintain an active research agenda and further serve the program through student advising, department committees, participation in shared governance, and professional outreach programs. Strong teaching performance, continued scholarly achievements, and university service are necessary for retention, tenure, and promotion.

Department/University Description:
The UWSP History Department has 14 full-time teaching faculty and staff offering a major in History as well as coordinating interdisciplinary majors in Social Science and International Studies. Through a general education requirement in History, the Department serves the entire undergraduate community at UWSP. The Department also offers a concentration in Race and Ethnicity Studies and administers a Peace Studies minor. Most students in the History programs are drawn from the immediate geographical area, and many are seeking teacher certification. The graduate program is designed to service teachers through a Master of Science in Teaching, offered in conjunction with the School of Education.

Qualifications:
Completed Ph.D. in History preferred for appointment, required for retention and tenure.  Specialization in U.S. Environmental History required. Previous teaching experience, strong communication skills, a commitment to undergraduate education, and awareness of the importance of diversity in education are also preferred.

Appointment Date: August 2011

Terms of Employment: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
