East Los Angeles College announces an opening for a full-time, tenure-track teaching position within
the Psychology Department. Applicants must be qualified to teach all courses offered within the
Psychology Department, including courses taught in the Chemical Dependency Counselor Program. The
assignment requires teaching at the main college campus and South Gate Educational Center. The
assignment may include teaching at off-campus centers and/or evening and weekend classes. Faculty
must be available to teach any time within those hours.
East Los Angeles College is located in the suburban community of Monterey Park, California, six miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is the principal gateway to higher education for residents of East Los Angeles and several cities in the San Gabriel Valley and southeastern Los Angeles, including Alhambra, Montebello, Huntington Park and South Gate. It has a culturally diverse student body of 28,000. The college has two 15-week semesters and summer and winter intersessions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Must be able to teach a variety of classes within the psychology department, including addiction studies courses. Teach ten three-unit courses over an academic year in accordance with established courses outlines.
* Participate in curriculum review and development; and the creation and assessment of student learning outcomes.
* Assess student performance and maintain accurate student records.
* Submit rosters and grades in a timely fashion.
* Advise, assist and mentor students to promote student success.
* Maintain scheduled office hours (5.5 per week) for student contact.
* Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in academic field.
* Contribute to department activities and participate in department meetings and college-wide committees.
* Work collegially with members of the department.
* Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned Master's degree in Psychology OR Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Master's degree in Counseling, Sociology, Statistics, Neuroscience, or Social Work OR the equivalent.
IN ORDER TO BE INTERVIEWED FOR THIS POSITION, APPLICANTS MUST HAVE:
* Experience teaching addiction studies courses in a community college or university setting, including but not limited to: Introduction to Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Co-Occurring Disorders, Psychology of Co-Dependence, Counseling Techniques for the Chemically Addicted, and Biopsychology of Chemical Dependency.
* Experience working in the field of addiction treatment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
* Knowledge of the chemical dependency counselor certification process and state regulations.
* Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
* Knowledge of various teaching techniques and awareness of diverse learning styles.
* Expertise in teaching current effective practices, including the encouragement of student self-reflection as active learners.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Experience teaching with the use of technology, including Internet based distance education (e.g.:ETUDES-ng) and technology-assisted presentations (i.e.: PowerPoint) in the classroom.
* A lifelong commitment to professional growth.
* A love of teaching and enjoyment of student contact.
* A strong commitment to teaching in a community college setting.
* Dedication to student success.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary and other terms of employment are competitive. Depending on experience and professional preparation, the starting faculty salary ranges from $47,600 to $74,110 for the academic year with an additional stipend for those with a doctorate degree from an accredited institution. Excellent fringe benefits for employees and their dependents are included.
