Position Summary: The faculty leader actively participates in the design and implementation of foundations curriculum in the areas of drawing, 2D and 3D design, creative processing, visual thinking, and digital technologies. The foundation program provides entering college students with hands-on skills and critical thinking capabilities to prepare them for success in their chosen field.

The Art Department currently offers a well-established B.S. program in Visual Communication Design with two recently added tracks in Photography and Motion Graphics. The foundation program offers support courses for Fashion Merchandising, Business Communications, and Film, Video and Theater departments as well as courses to fulfill the general education core.

Stevenson University has been steadily growing enrollment and expanding offerings for the past decade. The successful candidate will have considerable opportunity to contribute to exciting expansion efforts within the School of Design in particular, and the University in general.

Education/Experience: MFA plus three years previous studio arts teaching experience in a post-secondary education environment, extensive experience with a broad range of artistic materials and image-making processes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
-A student-centered approach to teaching, and a commitment to first-year student achievement.
-Extensive knowledge of contemporary visual art and design culture and practice, complemented by a thorough understanding of historical/critical theory related to art and design.
-A thorough understanding of and appreciation for the professional design field(s) students wish to explore and ultimately enter.
-Ability to use software for electronic publishing and administrative tasks, including but not limited to: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illlustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of basic web publishing tools a plus.
-Ability to develop effective course materials including syllabi, lessons, demonstrations, lectures and workshops for students or faculty.
-Proficiency in developing and teaching undergraduate studio courses.
-A desire to assist students with preparing for creative careers in Print, Interactive, Motion Graphics, Video, Photography and emerging media.
-Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a team of faculty sharing time, ideas, equipment, resources, and space.
-Proven leadership, excellent communication skills and the ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds.
-Successful candidates will be committed to excellence in teaching, advising, and service and will have proven record of integrating technology in the classroom, and in daily activities.
-Ability to adapt to a flexible work schedule (evenings) a plus.

Essential Functions: Position involves teaching, curriculum development and departmental assignments. Responsible for student mentoring and advising, department, university and community service. Must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to scholarship and professional development and self-improvement.

Each candidate will be expected to teach four studio courses each semester in foundation studies, or as assigned. The foundations faculty position requires acting as a course coordinator for adjunct faculty teaching foundation courses.

Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or telecommunications courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations and studio projects; and supervising independent study or research projects.

Student advising includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular, and career matters.

Department Service includes attending departmental meetings; developing foundation curriculum; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental events; organizing annual freshmen/sophomore portfolio review process; managing equipment purchasing for foundation studios; and managing faculty/student exhibitions in the Art Wing.

University service includes service on the Faculty Council, school and departmental committees.

Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, and the community.

Cooperative extension includes identifying current needs, adapting research results into contemporary language, presenting research-supported information and education to the people of the state, providing leadership in identifying and presenting cutting-edge technology in their discipline, developing interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, and collaborating with research and teaching faculty to stay current in their fields.

Administrative responsibilities include writing syllabi, grading course work, submitting final grades.

Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.
