The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Norman M. Rich Department of Surgery (SUR) seeks a qualified candidate for a full-time, non-tenure/non-tenure track Professor position. This position is located at the National Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), San Diego, CA.
The Norman M. Rich Department of Surgery supports the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Mission as the Nations Federal Health Sciences University which is committed to excellence in Medicine and Public Health during Peace and War. We provide the Nation with surgeons dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the United States Public Health Service and also with scientists who serve the common good. We serve the uniformed services and the Nation as the preeminent academic center with a worldwide perspective for education, research, service and consultation in surgery, disaster medicine, and mass casualty situation, and the logistics of surgical care.
Duties: The incumbent serves as Professor in the Norman M. Rich Department of Surgery and as such is responsible for teaching, research, patient care and administrative assignments.
In coordination with other faculty members of the Department, he/she will assist in the planning and development of the curriculum for the Department in a manner as to integrate the student's knowledge of basic sciences with clinical medicine. Participate in the development and organization of specific courses of study for the Norman M. Rich Department of' Surgery, which provide practical experiences in learning fundamentals of sound history and physical examination and diagnosis, and evaluation of patients with medical and surgical disorders.
Supervise groups of medical students, interns, residents and postdoctoral graduate assistants at the tutorial level in the laboratory or at bedside or clinical teaching rounds. Prepare materials for presentation; provide daily supervision to students and review student performance. Prepare and present lectures in areas of major expertise to entire student body. Participate in investigational, research and development of projects, direct experimental activities, evaluate data, draw conclusions and publish results. The incumbent will also serve as a research advisor to graduate students in field of expertise, assists in planning programs, setting objectives, evaluating progress, etc.
The successful candidate will perform patient care including all appropriate technical procedures, and supervise all patient care services performed by staff and students in his/her area of responsibility.
Qualifications Requirements: The incumbent must be a U.S citizen and possess a minimum of the MD degree, plus certification by the American Board of Surgery and state medical licensure. Substantial experience in medical school teaching, educational administration, personnel management, research and development, expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in critical reviewed scientific journals appropriate to his/her research, and possess active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Surgery. Experience with medical applications of electronic data processing is desirable. The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Professor level in accordance with USUHS academic guidelines.
