With a diverse student populace of nearly 3,000, Langston University is located in the rural north central town of Langston City. Langston University has urban campuses that are located in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Langston University offers degrees ranging from the associate's to the doctorate; and has gained national and international acclaim in several areas, including agriculture, goat research, biotechnology, education, physical therapy and nursing.
NATURE OF JOB: The Chief is responsible for managing all facets of the Langston University Police on three (3) campuses by planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the department; which includes public safety, patrol services, criminal investigations, communications, records, accreditation, and administration. Responsible for planning for potential disasters, traffic flow, motor pool, parking, and Homeland Security and preparing the campus community for all potential threats.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Police Chief works with considerable independence and provides measures necessary for protection of life and property, detection and prevention of crime, investigation and apprehension of suspects in criminal cases, preservation of order and strict observance of Federal, State, local and University laws, City ordinances, and rules and regulations of the Police Department. The Chief has overall responsibility for providing leadership to include determining major departmental policies, planning short-and long-range programs, potential disaster and security planning, traffic flow, motor pool, parking, Homeland Security, budget preparation, management of departmental expenditures, staffing and personnel management, and deals with major technical and administrative public safety matters with other departments, university administration, various commissions, other law enforcement agencies, and the public at large. The Chief remains current with Federal, State, and local legislation as they pertain to law enforcement and compliance in an university environment. He/She implement results of IACLEA and other assessments, and assure proper monitoring of all surveillance equipment. He/She must have trained security for all housing units and properly trained staff for operating Welcome Centers. He/She secures and monitor grant funds for the department. The Chief is responsible for all University drills, i.e. weather, active shooter, mass notification, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree (Police Science, Law Enforcement, or related field) required. Master's degree(Police Science, Law Enforcement, or related field) preferred. At least 5-10 years progressively responsible law enforcement experience. Experience should include 5 years of supervisory and/or management experience. Experience with and/or knowledge of, and sensitivity to, university communities is mandatory; experience at HBCU community preferred. Must be Oklahoma CLEET certified, or capable of obtaining the certification with in one (1) year of appointment. Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license or be capable of obtaining an Oklahoma license within six (6) months of appointment. Must document increasingly responsible "through the ranks" experience as a commissioned officer in a department of comparable or greater size to Langston University. Successful completion of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the FBI National Academy or the Southern Police institute preferred.
