The Department of Economics at South Dakota State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. This is a full-time, tenure track, nine-month appointment, 100% teaching position. Two months of summer salary for the first three years will be provided by the Nies Endowment for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The major responsibilities of this position include teaching 6-9 credit hours per semester in support of the core courses in the Entrepreneurial Studies degree programs and minor offered by the Department of Economics including courses in enterprise management, innovation and intellectual property management, financing and venture capital, and strategic planning and control. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach courses supporting the university-wide Economics and Management Programs, which also serve students in Hospitality Management, Operations Management, Construction Management, and other management-related degree programs.

Most courses will be taught on the Brookings campus, but online delivery of courses is of increasing interest to stakeholders.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain an applied research program leading to peer-reviewed publication in appropriate journals, mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in general departmental and university service activities. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise and mentor students in the entrepreneurial studies degree program and to assist with the extra-curricular student activities.

There are currently over 110 entrepreneurship undergraduate students and this is a fast growing major. Innovation Partners and the Enterprise Institute located at the SDSU Research Park Innovation Center provide opportunities for networking with regional innovators and entrepreneurs, and also provide opportunities for part-time employment and incubator space for students. SDSU has a strong investor and alumni network that is actively engaged in the classroom and in student ventures competitions including the First Dakota National Bank Business Plan Competition, the Veenis Entrepreneurial Experience, and the Rickert Visiting Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. The CEO (Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization) club is very active and students in the degree program and the CEO club compete in regional business plan and innovation/idea competitions and have used awards to finance their start-up enterprises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Management Sciences, Business Administration, or a closely related area with a specialization in entrepreneurship or innovation management, small business financial or venture capital management; demonstrated scholarship, evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, and potential for effective teaching.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the college level; demonstrated record of scholarly productivity through publication, research presentations, or external grants.

SALARY:
Commensurate with qualifications.

Graduates of the department hold key leadership and management positions across the northern Great Plains and Midwest in banking, investment and venture capital firms, processing and manufacturing, energy and bioenergy, and food and agribusiness management, and are leaders among the innovation and entrepreneurship community. The network of engaged alumni is the basis of the Economics and Management Partners Program and provides funding for endowments and faculty scholars in support of advanced research and student activities.

SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of over 150,000.
