The mission of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) is to provide the highest quality education and research programs in the health sciences to those selected individuals who demonstrate dedication to a career in the health professions of the uniformed services. The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), invites applicants to apply for the position of Chairperson with the Department of Dermatology (DER). The Department of Dermatology uses a comprehensive curriculum to educate medical students, resident and staff physicians as well as allied health professionals in the specialty of dermatology for the purpose of caring for patients with skin disorders. Through cutting-edge research, the department maintains its commitment to academic medicine in the context of the broader needs of the military. The department is committed to advancing the field of dermatology through clinical expertise, operational input and research in the Army, Air Force, Navy and U.S. Public Health Service.

Duties:

The incumbent serves as the Chief Executive of DER and is responsible for department program administration including management of finances, evaluation of faculty, staff and students to ensure program quality. The incumbent will coordinate clinical activities with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and serve on school department and dissertation committees as needed.

In coordination with other faculty members of the School of Medicine and with the approval of the Dean plans, and develops the curriculum for the department. The incumbent is responsible for providing a productive and meaningful learning environment for students by continually evaluating and revising the curriculum as needed. He or She will coordinate with the Dean, Associate Dean for Medical Education, and the Chairs of other clinical and basic science departments of the School of Medicine to determine the variety and scope of instructional techniques to be used such as lectures, discussions, laboratory exercises, seminars, conferences, audiovisual media, and computer-assisted problems appropriate to accomplish the learning objectives. In addition to, preparing and evaluating training manuals and other educational materials for the students.

The successful candidate will develop and organize specific courses of study for the department which provide practical experiences in learning fundamentals of sound history and physical examination and diagnosis, understanding of the interrelationships between patient and disease, and evaluation of patients with medical or surgical disorders.

Incumbent will oversee and evaluate all departmental research and teaching activities, and provide supervision and direction for the entire department. Participates in investigational research and development projects; directs experimental activities, evaluates data, draws conclusions, and publishes results. Reviews and critiques research and development areas and develops, monitors and evaluates contractual research and development arrangements. He or She will ensure compliance with regulations and procedures by reviewing literature and preparation of protocols by subordinates. Coordinates provision of patient care for relevant dermatologic conditions with WRNMMC and associate clinics.

Qualification Requirements :

Candidates must possess a minimum of a medical degree (MD. or D.O) be board certified in Dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology and maintain an active unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state. Must have substantial experience in medical school teaching, educational administration, personnel management, research and development expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in critically reviewed scientific journals appropriate to his/her research and Dermatology. The incumbent must possess active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Dermatology, and demonstrate leadership abilities as well as the ability to develop consensus decisions.

The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Professor or Associate Professor level in accordance with USUHS academic policies.

Knowledge of military medical organizations and experience with medical applications of electronic data processing is desirable.

This appointment shall be as Professor or Associate Professor and as the Chairperson in DER. The appointment as Professor shall be tenured and the appointment for Associate Professor shall be in the tenure eligible track.

Assignment as Chairperson is an administrative faculty assignment and is without tenure. This assignment is for a five-year term and may be renewed with no limit on the number of renewals. Assignment as Chairperson is not a continuous appointment and as such the incumbent serves at the pleasure of his or her immediate supervior(s) and may be relieved as Chair at any time.

U. S. citizenship is required.

The position does not require a secret clearance. Nominees for this position shall be required to successfully complete a security background investigation. Failure to meet the background investigation requirements will result in the withdrawal of the position offer or removal from the position.
