Bucknell University

Dean, Arts & Sciences

Job Summary: For the talented and well-rounded students who call its beautiful campus home, and for the alumni who treasure its impact, the Bucknell University experience is an exploration of rich possibilities, from which they develop the personal direction, balance, and intellectual and interpersonal skills to navigate the challenges of the 21st century. The largest of the classic, highly selective, private residential liberal arts colleges, Bucknell combines a world-class university education with the intimate learning experience of a liberal arts college. A rarity in American higher education, Bucknell is a liberal arts university whose curriculum stretches across the full range of the liberal arts into highly regarded professional studies taught in a liberal arts context, including engineering, management, music, and education.

Bucknell's College of Arts and Sciences, with an educational mission at the heart of the University's historic purposes, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of America's top-ranked liberal arts colleges. Providing a strong liberal arts base of both broad learning and deep opportunities for specialization to its 3,000 students, the college consists of more than 275 faculty members in 31 departments and interdisciplinary programs. Offering 47 majors and 62 minors to arts and sciences students, the college also provides the basic mathematics, science, and liberal arts courses for students in the College of Engineering. The college is structured along traditional liberal arts divisions - Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics.

The preferred candidate will have the PhD or other appropriate terminal degree, will have earned tenure, and will have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service that would merit appointment as a senior faculty member. The preferred candidate also will have a record of increasing responsibility and success as a leader in higher education administration, a comprehensive understanding of the mission of a liberal arts college or university, and demonstrated evidence of successful collaboration with faculty, department chairs/program directors, and senior administrative colleagues.
