The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), F. Edward H├ębert School of Medicine, Department of Pathology (PAT) is seeking to hire a qualified individual for the position of Senior Research Associate (non-tenure track/non-tenure track). As an integral part of its mission, the Department conducts extensive research programs studying the pathogenesis of human diseases.

The Department of Pathology is responsible for providing a comprehensive education and training program in the field of pathology appropriate to the training of students of medicine and for the development and conduct of educational programs in pharmacological sciences for graduate students, postgraduate fellows, residents, and other DoD personnel as required. The Department is also responsible for the conduct of scientific research in current areas of interest and the professional exchange of findings.

Duties: The incumbent will conduct research projects in support of department faculty members and assume supervisory responsibility for laboratory design, personnel training, and overall function. The Senior Research Associate will be involved in highly specialized assignments responsible for formulating, planning, and executing laboratory experiments: designing and performing procedures used in traumatic brain injury research and in the development of vaccines and pathogenesis and analyzing molecular signatures and biomarkers in biological fluids, blood and brain and performs biochemical assays from animal tissues. Procedures and techniques that the incumbent will perform include: Gene Expression and miRNA studies using modern molecular biology procedures. Analytical methods and procedures for quantitative estimation of compounds/metabolites include spectrophotometry, fluorometry, electrochemistry, and measurement of radioactivity.

Ancillary duties will include conducting literature searches that assemble pertinent scientific information bearing on research programs; assisting in the planning of research approaches; performing statistical analysis, graphics, and data storage; evaluating accuracy and reliability of data; preparing data for presentation at scientific meetings or for publication in scientific journals; and assisting in the submission of grant proposals.

Qualification Requirements: The incumbent must have a minimum of a Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in medicine, biochemistry or closely related field; plus equivalent research skill and subject knowledge; and, expertise and experience as reflected by a number of scientific publications in critically reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to his/her research. This level of expertise and knowledge may also be evidenced by the possession of a master's degree in the particular area of science required by the position, combined with a minimum of three years of specialized experience in the scientific specialization; or the possession of a bachelor's degree in the particular area of science required by the position, combined with a minimum of five years of specialized experience in the scientific specialization. Experience with medical applications of electronic data processing is desirable.
