Report Shows Higher Education Employment Continues to Grow:
Part-time and community college jobs on the rise

August 14, 2009, State College, PA -- A new report from a leading job board for higher education job openings shows that the number of jobs in higher education continues to grow, bucking the overall employment trend.

The free report from HigherEdJobs.com (http://www.higheredjobs.com/link.cfm?q=2&y=2009&id=3) shows jobs at institutions of higher education (community colleges and four-year universities) grew 3.5 percent in the first half of 2009 despite the number of overall jobs declining by the same percent. The report analyzes both the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics data and job posting data from HigherEdJobs.com.

The increase in jobs in higher education is occurring even as colleges and universities appear to be trying to trim their payrolls. Institutions on HigherEdJobs.com's unlimited posting plan, which have no financial disincentive to post multiple job openings, posted one-third fewer jobs during Q2 2009 compared to the previous year.

The types of jobs colleges and universities advertise is continuing to evolve as well. It appears many institutions are focusing their resources toward faculty positions and away from non-faculty jobs. This trend accelerated in Q1 2009 and continued through Q2 2009.

"Colleges and universities appear to be reducing non-faculty jobs and creating more part-time positions. Their goal is to reduce costs and focus resources on the institution's core mission," said John Ikenberry, president of HigherEdJobs.com.

The report also finds that job growth at community colleges is strong, driven in part by students choosing this option in the face of a poor economy and added emphasis by Washington for this higher educational option. The percentage of advertised jobs from community colleges increased from 19.9 percent in H1 2008 to 20.9 percent in H1 2009.

HigherEdJobs.com is the leading source for jobs and career information in academia. During 2008, more than 2,900 colleges and universities posted over 67,000 faculty, administrative and executive job postings to the company's web site. HigherEdJobs.com is visited over two million times each month. HigherEdJobs.com is published by Internet Employment Linkage, Inc. that is headquartered in State College, PA, and has an accounting and operations office in Oak Park, IL.
