Higher Education Jobs Grow, But Not Unscathed, as Recession Winds Down

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (February 16, 2010) -- Despite the economic recession, the total number of jobs in higher education continues to follow regular historical patterns and has been characterized as "stable," according to the latest Higher Education Employment Report from HigherEdJobs.com. Following historical patterns, the number of jobs in higher education continued to rise during the fourth quarter of 2009, albeit at a slightly lower rate than in the recent past. In Q4 2009, the number of jobs in higher education grew 1.3 percent. Since 2005, fourth quarter growth in the number of higher education jobs has averaged 1.8 percent. Advertisements for job openings in higher education showed positive signs for the first time in over a year. Job postings from colleges and universities on HigherEdJobs.com's unlimited posting plan were up 10.4 percent during December 2009 compared to the year before. November was up 10.9 percent. For the quarter, job postings were still down 3.6 percent, but that is a vast improvement from the 29 percent decline observed during the third quarter.
