SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation and maintenance of a Sculpture laboratory and related areas; operate and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment and instructional material; provide information and technical assistance to faculty and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of a Sculpture laboratory and related areas; perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Assist teachers and students in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and supplies in the instructional setting; provide assistance to students according to instructions by program full-time area faculty.
  • Prepare instructional materials and equipment for teachers' demonstrations and student use as required, according to approved procedures.
  • Order, receive and store supplies, materials and equipment; maintain inventories, assuring that adequate qualities are available for instructional use.
  • Operate a wide variety of specialized equipment such as Electric welders, oxygen acetylene torches, furnaces, forges, various kilns, stone saws, table and band saws, overhead cranes and fork lifts, mullers and investment mixers, high output compressor system, fluidized beds and wax working equipment, metal bending machines, rolling and shearing equipment, sanding and finishing machines, dust and fume extraction systems, and pneumatic and power tools.
  • Maintain laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure proper storage and handling of investment materials, acids and patinas, solvents and paints, welding gasses, metals and waxes, and other supplies and chemicals as needed.
  • Adjust, calibrate, maintain and perform ordinary repairs to tools, equipment and safety systems; report major repair needs or arrange for repairs according to established procedures.
  • Prepare and monitor the annual laboratory budgets; control expenditures for parts and the repair or replacement of Sculpture and Jewelry Design equipment and tools.
  • Prepare and maintain various records and reports related to laboratory operations, supplies, inventory and budget; including required MSDS sheets and District Hazardous materials inventories.
  • Assist in the coordination of the use of lab facilities, assuring the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Provide technical information to instructors and other district personnel regarding Sculpture and Jewelry design equipment, techniques and materials; recommend the purchase of sculpture equipment as requested.
  • Work in conjunction with College and District Facilities and Maintenance personal to coordinate maintenance and repair of Lab facilities and building infrastructure such as lights, dust and fume extraction systems, high output compressor, and water sediment containment systems as required.
  • Ability to fabricate tool and equipment mounting systems, storage shelves, weather covers and other support assemblies as requested.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers and other personnel as assigned; assign and review their work in conjunction with area full-time faculty.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Any combination equivalent to: two years college-level course work with specialized training in Sculpture and two years experience in a Sculpture lab facility.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Preparation, operation and maintenance of a college Sculpture laboratory.
  • Sculpture techniques used to produce sculpture in a variety of media.
  • Safe and proper operation of a variety of Sculpture Lab equipment and tools.
  • Safe and proper operation of welders, furnaces and specialized casting equipment.
  • Principles, practices and procedures used in a Sculpture and Design laboratory.
  • Safety regulations involving the use, storage and disposal of toxic materials.
  • Principles and practices of providing work direction and training.
  • Procurement and Recordkeeping techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Operation and maintenance of dust and fume extraction systems & other safety systems
ABILITY TO:
  • Perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Provide information and assistance to students and staff.
  • Assure the care and security of department equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Safely move heavy objects including operation of cranes and fork lifts
  • Maintain and repair learning equipment and tools in proper working order.

Working Conditions:

Sculpture lab environment; subject to fumes, lifting and exposure to chemicals and toxic substances.
