PROFILE of the LIBRARIES DEPARTMENT
The UNLV University Libraries' website, web-based services, and associated applications are critical components supporting the information discovery and delivery environment for 21st century students, researchers and lifelong learners. This department head position is part of the Library Technologies Division at the UNLV University Libraries, comprised of fifteen staff across two departments. The Web and Application Development Services Department develops and deploys webpages, websites, and related applications within the Libraries, and collaboratively helps maintain existing web-based systems and services. In addition, the department is involved in the exploration and adaptation of innovative technologies, including those with a web tie-in as well as standalone applications.

ROLE of the POSITION
This tenure-track faculty position, reporting to the Director of Library Technologies, will lead and participate in the development, enhancement, and maintenance of the UNLV Libraries web presence, including internal and public websites and web-based applications. As department head, the incumbent will supervise a department of three staff (two application developers and a web designer and development specialist). The UNLV Libraries web presence is extensive and currently encompasses several discovery systems and services, including the main website (http://www.library.unlv.edu), digital collections (http://d.library.unlv.edu), and the library online catalog (http://webpac.library.unlv.edu). Content is managed within Drupal 6 and 7 content management instances, as well as the native environments of others systems, such as the III Millennium online catalog and the CONTENTdm digital asset management system.

The incumbent will serve as a bridge between clients (other library staff) and the technical development team s/he supervises, working closely to understand desired project goals, including website design and functionality. Teamwork, collaboration, compromise, and the ability to communicate and share ideas is essential. The incumbent will serve as project manager for web related projects, ranging in scope from minor and major redesigns to new from-scratch projects, including web-based applications with database back-ends. At the UNLV Libraries, project management encompasses the broad lifecycle of workflow and task management, including establishing timelines, assisting with needs assessment, assigning resources and delegating tasks, balancing priorities among concurrent projects, sound communication, and negotiating differences - all necessary components fostering the forward momentum required to bring projects to successful conclusion. The incumbent is expected to work with the client(s), usability colleagues, and technical staff in the development and presentation of iterative designs intended to meet client expectations, while also balancing other inputs such as knowledge of web design best practices, usability feedback, and strategies for optimizing the user experience on a variety of devices.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively with others; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure. The Head of Web and Application Development Services will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and s/he will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels. The incumbent will also serve as the Libraries' liaison to the broader web development community at UNLV, and assist the Library Systems Department in maintaining and enhancing the technical web infrastructure (web database, development, and production environments).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: A master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association; Experience supervising technical staff. Demonstrated leadership potential with the skills necessary to successfully lead and function as a department head.

Technical and Creative / Design Skills: The incumbent is expected to possess strong technical skills associated with modern web design environments. The incumbent should have experience in:
  • user interface design, developing websites using HTML and CSS
  • experience with site-building, theming, coding, and maintenance using a web content management system such as Drupal
  • front-end web development experience utilizing JSON, JQuery, or other client-side processing techniques
  • familiarity with web API libraries and frameworks
  • experience with back-end database design and architecture, including experience with import / export of data between different systems
  • knowledge of and expertise with modern web design standards, including responsive / adaptive design principles supporting cross platform accessibility
  • familiarity with user centered design methodologies and usability principles
  • familiarity with information architecture best practices and principles in designing websites
Additional Skills: The incumbent is expected to possess interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills, including:
  • demonstrated project management skills and experience working with clients and technical staff in the development of websites / projects, with evidence of strong collaboration and iterative design methodologies
  • ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • ability to work in and foster a collaborative team environment, balancing technical knowledge with client input and user needs and expectations.
  • excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate technical web design concepts to clients with diverse technology backgrounds as well as document technical processes and procedures
  • ability to work within a dynamic and continually evolving academic library environment, with the ability to handle shifting priorities
  • evidence of excellent organization skills and sound judgment
  • willingness to continually learn and stay abreast of developments in web coding, design, and usability
  • experience in evaluating, selecting, and implementing software associated with web initiatives
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of two years as a manager and supervisor of full time staff in a technical academic library setting.
  • A record of professional engagement and scholarship. The Libraries may consider appointment as a tenured faculty member for applicants with a sufficiently strong and consistent record of experience, service, and scholarship.
SALARY RANGE
This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II or III (equivalent to an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor). In addition, the UNLV Libraries is committed to and helps fund professional development opportunities. Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. Position is contingent upon funding.
