UBC Okanagan invites applications and nominations for appointment as Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, for a term of five years commencing August 1, 2010.

The University of British Columbia, ranked among the world's top universities, added a new chapter to its remarkable history with the opening of a second campus in 2005- this one located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Offering an intimate learning environment while having all the advantages of a global university, UBC Okanagan boasts a distinct, interdisciplinary teaching and research environment that fosters student creativity and innovation and promotes the values of global citizenship and a sustainable society. The rapidly expanding university is home to approximately 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 340 faculty members, 380 support staff, and seven Faculties.

The Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences is the largest Faculty at UBC Okanagan with discipline-based and interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degrees in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. UBC Okanagan invites individuals capable of bringing vision, energy and leadership to the Faculty and who are committed to exploring the full potential of its new institutional setting.

Based in Kelowna and reporting to the Provost, the Dean will serve as a key member of the leadership team at UBC Okanagan. The new Dean will encourage an interdisciplinary approach, support academic excellence, and promote originality in research, scholarship and teaching. He/she will build an enhanced student experience and will attract and support creative faculty members.

Candidates for the Dean's role should have outstanding academic credentials, a distinguished research record, proven leadership and administrative abilities, a demonstrated focus on the student experience, and a strong commitment to excellence. The ability to support and motivate research and learning activities, a strategic leadership style which promotes innovation, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Professor in an academic unit within the Faculty.
