Accountant Technicians perform technical accounts maintenance work for agencies with complex accounting functions or systems characterized by federal grant reporting; guidelines other than those contained in the State Administrative Manual; enterprise accounting; complex fund accounting; and/or external reporting requirements. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
The University of Nevada Las Vegas Controller's Office is seeking an Accountant Technician 1. This position is responsible for the supervision of daily activities of the vendor payment section of the Accounts Payable Department. The incumbent supervises a staff of three and reports to the Assistant Controller for Accounts Payable. The chosen candidate must have excellent customer service skills, possess a detailed and complete understanding of accounts payable processing, and possess the ability to interpret policies and procedures for the disbursement of funds. The Accountant Technician I is a working supervisor with the responsibility of processing approximately 25% or more of incoming documents. This position is responsible for working with vendors with a high volume of invoices that require a thorough review for accuracy and data entry. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the processing of accounts payable vendor invoices, including blanket purchase orders, payment vouchers, construction-in-progress payments and travel reimbursements; identifying and correcting any accounting errors and/or discrepancies; ensuring proper recording, coding, and reporting of clerical information; auditing the backup of documentation for proper signature authority, appropriate use of funds, purchase order accuracy, and compliance with state and university policies and procedures; and processing records for payment. The incumbent is responsible for resolving complex issues referred by department staff. The chosen candidate must also respond to and resolve difficult clerical questions and issues by conferring with professional and technical accounting personnel. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8AM-5PM. *Per the Nevada State Legislature, classified employees are subject to six (6) mandatory unpaid furlough days.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school supplemented by 6 college credits in beginning accounting and two years of financial records maintenance experience equivalent to an Accounting Assistant III in Nevada State service. This would include such duties as controlling accounts payable/receivable; preparing financial reports for internal management use; and reconciling complex accounts; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which must have included 6 college credits in beginning accounting.
As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
1) This recruitment is open only to persons who have been employed for at least six months of continuous full-time equivalent classified state service and are currently employed at UNLV.
2) Must have previous experience working in an accounts payable department/office processing a large number of invoices for a large company or university.
3) Must be familiar with the IRS 1099 reporting process, vendor maintenance and electronic payment options.
