The Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland seeks a qualified candidate for a Director, Surgical Skills and Training (non-tenure/non-tenure track) Associate Professor Position.
Duties: The incumbent will serve as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and as such is responsible for teaching, research and administrative assignments. The incumbent will coordinate with the Chief of Academic Surgery, Student Clerkship Director, Residency Program Directors, Director of Surgical Simulation and the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine on the development, implementation and improvement of surgical procedural and simulation training curricula.
The individual will also be responsible for the development and implementation of CME courses, educational research activities and faculty development programs with respect to surgical educational programs within the Department. He/she will serve as a liaison between the non-clinical educational and training facilities and the Department of Surgery clinical faculty. The incumbent will be responsible for timely submission of applicable educational grants to support Surgery and multidisciplinary integrated training programs.
Qualifications Requirements: Incumbent must bring to this position a minimum of an earned post-graduate degree (Ph.D., or equivalent degree) in a health related field of study, medical education or closely related discipline allied with the duties and responsibilities of the position.
The position requires: substantial experience in medical school teaching, educational administration, personnel management, research and development; experience in simulation and skills training including team training; experience with the structure of perioperative services, surgical anatomy, and principles of clinical and experimental surgery; expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in critically reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to the incumbent's research, and possess active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Surgery; experience and knowledge in medical applications of electronic data processing, data management skills, computer automation; and exceptional written and oral communications skills. Knowledge of principles of adult learning is desirable. The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor level in accordance with USUHS academic guidelines.
