Visiting Research Specialist
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences

Position:
The Department
of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) seeks a 12-month, 100%-time visiting academic professional to conduct DNA-based
microbial research related to ongoing efforts to identify the cause and subsequent remediation of foaming in swine manure management
systems. This position may become non-visiting in the future dependent upon funding and programmatic
needs.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct laboratory analyses including DNA extraction and PCR
- Execute established experimental protocols
- Use specialized statistical software to process data and conduct analysis of microbial community data produced from environmental samples
- Prepare samples of DNA for high-throughput DNA sequence analysis and preliminary bioinformatics processing
- Manage and maintain database
- Collaborate with other researchers on the preparation of project reports
- Monitor graduate students in the lab and provide guidance when needed.
Qualifications:
BS required; MS preferred in microbiology, biology, or a related field.
Alternative degree fields may be considered if accompanied by equivalent experience. At least one year experience with microbiology lab
techniques, including DNA extraction and PCR. Experience using genotyping software or statistical analysis software is preferred. Experience
using bioinformatics methods to analyze high-throughput sequencing data is preferred.
Salary: Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Starting Date: This appointment will begin as soon as
possible after the closing date.
