Position Title: Communications Specialist/Editor

Direct Reports: Director, Marketing and Communications

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in journalism, English with writing and editing emphasis, technical/professional communications, or related communications or public administration major

Work Experience: Minimum of five years of work experience in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, or related field;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Strong interviewing, writing, editing, and organizational and computer skills required. (NOTE: Impeccable
editing skills and adherence to the college Style Guide are essential to this position);
2. Working knowledge and understanding of graphic design, typography, layout, and printing specifications
relevant to the design and production of marketing and advertising materials;
3. Strong skills in social media, particularly Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter;
4. Photography experience using digital cameras;
5. Ability to communicate effectively and work in a fast-paced team environment;
6. Ability to perform responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner as well as be reliable, resourceful, tactful, self-starting, flexible, and cooperative; and
7. Comfortable with public speaking and serving as a representative of the college at public and private functions;
8. Understanding and commitment to the educational opportunities and support services the community college offers students and prospective students.

Essential Functions, Job Duties, and Responsibilities:
The Communications Specialist/Editor develops and directs internal and external communications, including public information, advertising, publications, social media, and media relations for the college and the DTCC Foundation. Responsibilities include writing, editing, proofreading, and disseminating information and communications. More specifically, the duties are as follows:
1. Develop, implement, and direct processes as well as serve as a working member of the Marketing and Communications team to produce internal and external communications, including publications, marketing materials, advertising campaigns, news releases, media advisories, and information communicated through social media;
2. Write, edit, and disseminate internal and external communications and promotional materials as appropriate;
3. Proofread and edit publications, advertisements, news releases, website and Internet information, and communications and promotions produced in the Marketing and Communications Department as well as by other departments and divisions as appropriate;
4. Communicate internally throughout the multi-campus college which has facilities in two counties; respond to media requests for information and develop media contacts and communicate with media personnel for news and feature coverage; write and distribute media advisories and releases in the service area and beyond; connect media to appropriate college personnel for interviewing and information-sharing; and monitor media outlets, including social media and blogs, for coverage mentioning, involving, and/or conveying information relevant to the college;
5. Serve as the liaison and coordinator with printing company representatives, advertising and ad agency representatives, as well as businesses and institutions seeking advertising support from the college;
6. Work for Marketing and Communications Director and staff, as well as other college personnel as appropriate, to provide input to and maintain annual departmental plans aligned with the college's strategic plan, including the
departmental budget, expenditure summaries and reports, and production workflow;
7. Work to create synergies among Marketing and Communications department staff and other college departments and personnel;
8. Gather, write/edit, and disseminate information (coordinated with Web Designer) for internet and website communications; maintain social media sites for college including, but not limited to, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. Monitor sites for posts and respond to inquiries in a timely manner;
9. Participate in, assist with, and/or direct special projects; and
10. Carry out other duties assigned by the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Vice President, Institutional Advancement, and/or the President.
