The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Financial Aid Counselor to provide service to students on the financial aid process and counsel them in all phases of financial aid. This position will evaluate financial aid applications and determine aid packages in accordance with state, federal, and institutional policies governing financial aid.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Counsel and advise students on financial aid eligibility and various financial aid programs.
Provide comprehensive, timely and high quality services to all students.
Must be able to learn and maintain current knowledge of Federal Title IV regulations pertaining to financial aid.
Assist in student recruitment and retention activities; attend open house events to offer support and guidance to prospective students.
Participate in training and professional development activities as appropriate.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
BA/BS degree required and a minimum of one (1) year experience in the field of customer service, financial aid, student services, or banking. Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail; demonstrate ability to interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures; excellent analytical and problem solving skills; and a demonstrated ability to relate to a diverse population of students, parents, and staff. Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications; Outlook, Word, Excel, and database management software.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Candidates with prior experience in higher education a plus.
