This position is no longer an active posting on HigherEdJobsThe Greenspun College of Urban Affairs (GCUA) addresses contemporary urban problems through faculty research, educational programs, and service to the university and larger community. These activities are inclusive of students and faculty in the following fields: communication studies, criminal justice, environmental studies, journalism and media studies, couple and family therapy, public administration and workforce development, social work, and urban leadership. We aspire to prepare citizens to improve communities in an increasingly global world. Serving as the nexus between community and university, we foster critical communication and engaged citizenship by working with diverse populations, addressing issues of public policy and social justice, and enhancing services and quality of life for people and their environments.
The GCUA has robust undergraduate and graduate programs, including a total enrollment for Fall 2012 of 798 lower-division undergraduates, 543 upper-division undergraduates, 274 Master's students, and 42 doctoral students. The College has excellent faculty doing traditional academic work that is nationally and internationally recognized, with a history of federal, public, and private funding. In addition, many faculty actively work in the community, allowing UNLV to be a visible presence and important resource for the wider community. The College is located in Greenspun Hall, a $94 million state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2008, serving as the home for five of the college's departments and schools. At 120,000 square feet, this massive but energy-efficient five-story building features an auditorium, computer-assisted classrooms, high-definition studios and post-production laboratories, writing and research laboratories, and faculty offices and meeting spaces.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the GCUA and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost. The Dean is responsible for managing academic, fiscal, physical, and human resources and has significant responsibilities in community relations, community outreach, and fundraising. The person we seek will embody all of the following characteristics, skills, and attributes:
- A leading academic with an established record of scholarship. Someone who understands and supports the diversity of faculty research in the College (from humanists and historians to social scientists to technicians and practitioners);
- Someone who appreciates the multiple missions of the University and College, who will promote success in research, teaching and service;
- A visionary advocate and spokesperson for the College. Someone who builds partnerships, promotes our visibility, and enhances our reputation;
- A proven administrator. One who is an effective communicator; good listener; accessible, collegial, supportive; and an efficient manager. The ideal candidate will be able to handle complex budgets and different types of accounts;
- An aggressive resource and opportunity seeker. Someone with an extensive professional network who has significant experience in building partnerships and collaborations at the state and federal level; and
- A defender of faculty governance. Someone who respects, listens to, and appreciates our diversity and the range of faculty perspectives and expertise. Someone who understands the unique mission of each unit.
The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications: (1) a terminal degree awarded from a regionally accredited institution within the candidate's field of study; (2) academic record of effective leadership as a dean, assistant/associate dean, chair/director, or equivalent administrative position with direct supervision of faculty and staff; and (3) scholarly record meriting appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in one of the university's academic areas of study.
Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions.
