The Senior Human Resources Generalist supports the HR department in providing exceptional human resources services to managers and employees. The incumbent manages and executes all recruiting and selection activities, serves as an advisor to managers and employees on employee relations, performance management, talent management and total rewards issues.
Key Responsibility 1
Provides counsel to managers on employee and/or labor relations issues to include: coaching, counselling, discipline and termination.Investigates problems such as working conditions, disciplinary actions and employee appeals and grievances. Provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to department managers.
Key Responsibility 2
Manages and executes all recruiting activities to include: job scoping, assisting in crafting job descriptions and job postings, screening resumes, as needed, conferring with and advising managers on selection decisions, extending job offers and assisting with the on-boarding process.
Key Responsibility 3
Facilitates and/or provides training (including orientation) to managers and staff. May be involved in working with training vendors and may make recommendations on selection of programs.
Key Responsibility 4
Conducts exit interviews, analyzes data and makes recommendations to HR and departmental management team for corrective action and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibility 5
Drafts responses to complaints from EEOC, IDHR or similar agencies. Confers with AVP of HR and legal counsel and makes recommendations on how to proceed.
Key Responsibility 6
Participates in review and revision of HR policies as needed.
The job will involve heavy oral communication with staff at all levels. Written communication via memo as well as electronic media is also required. External communication is also required with respect to: vendors, staffing agencies, union business agents etc.
This position provides customer service to internal stakeholders (managers and employees, primarily) as well as external customers. (E.g. anyone who requires the services of the HR department.) It is important that this role be able to build and develop relationships and gain the respect and trust of his/her customers. This is key since this role will be consultative.
Education & Experience:
BA in Business, HR or a related field or the equivalent amount of experience. 7 years of experience in HR specifically working with employee relations issues and other generalist duties. Experience working in a unionized environment related to grievances, contract application and interpretation. Must be a self starter and have a high level of initiative.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to make sound, unbiased decisions based on the information presented; ability to establish credibility and develop and maintain relationships with managers and employees; ability to work independently, conceptualize and draw conclusions based on previous experiences; ability to objectively coach employees and management through complex, difficult and emotional issues; ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations or law; ability to organize and prioritize work.
Certifications & Licenses:
SPHR or PHR strongly preferred
