The City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) District 508, is the largest community college system in Illinois and one of the largest in the nation, with 5,800 faculty and staff serving 120,000 students at seven campuses and thirteen satellite sites city-wide. The City Colleges of Chicago is currently in the midst of a collaborative effort to review and revise CCC programs and practices to ensure students leave CCC college-ready, career-ready and prepared to pursue their life's goals.

CCC includes seven colleges: Richard J. Daley College, Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Harry S Truman College, Harold Washington College and Wilbur Wright College. The system also oversees: the Washburne Culinary Institute, the French Pastry School, two restaurants, five Child Development Centers, the Center for Distance learning, the Workforce Institute, the public broadcast station WYCC-TV Channel 20 and radio station WKKC-FM 89.3FM.

Duties
To teach the Transportation, Distribution & Logistics (TDL) Knowledge and Skills component of an Adult Education Bridge to TDL Careers program with the goal of preparing students who test at the High Intermediate Adult Basic Education level for successful transition to a Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics certificate or degree program; to pass the GED test; and/or to qualify for entry level employment.

Develops class syllabus, instructional materials lists and lesson plans based on the ICCB-approved bridge course syllabus and City Colleges-approved bridge curricula. Responsible for sharing syllabus with students at beginning of the course. Designs and delivers instruction to prepare and motivate students for successful transition to occupational programs, including an introduction to Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics(TDL); vocabulary; basic principles, techniques, and methods; career exploration, goal-setting, and job readiness skills for entry-level TDL employment. Employs a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, projects, and field trips. Uses a combination of large and small-group activities and incorporates technology into instruction. To the extent possible, incorporates use of authentic equipment and/or materials during instruction.

Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests. Assigns and reviews class work and homework. Works to optimize student outcomes by monitoring student progress on an ongoing basis through the use of oral and written assessments, standardized tests, and classroom observation. Refers students to tutoring services as needed. Stays abreast of developments in the TDL field and adjusts teaching methods accordingly. As a bridge program team member, attends staff meetings and collaborates with other bridge instructors, as well as transition specialists and occupational program faculty as needed, to plan and coordinate effective instructional and transition strategies.

Attends regular staff meetings with Adult Education administrators and coordinators to stay informed on program initiatives, policies and procedures. Maintains accurate and complete student records including daily attendance and assigns grade designations as required by state, district, and college policy. Assists with program registration. Attends college or district-sponsored staff development activities as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
B.S. or B.A. or equivalent with education, experience, and/or training that has provided the instructor with documented appropriate knowledge of the TDL industry. Appropriate training may include vendor, manufacturer, in-service, or other structured on-the-job training in this occupation. International degree(s) must be evaluated by a certified provider (e.g. E.C.E., W.E.S., etc.)

The following lists appropriate occupational titles that demonstrate sufficient experience in Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics careers:
  • Warehousing & Distribution Center Operations Manager
  • Supply Chain Manager
  • Inventory Control
  • Equipment and Materials Handling
  • Shipping, Receiving, and Traffic Clerk
  • Warehousing Assistant
Must have verified significant instructional experience with adults or other discipline-related experience and has received, or is willing to receive, training in adult learning theory, student-centered teaching methods, curriculum implementation, syllabus and lesson plan development, and assessment. Education, training, and/or experience reflect knowledge of current adult education classroom assessment techniques. Must be proficient in the use of technology as it applies to instruction, i.e., desktop and laptop computers, LCD projectors, email, Internet, and programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
