Description: The University College of Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for an exciting employment opportunity as a Pre-Health Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor is responsible for ensuring that Pre-Health students receive a consistently high quality of academic advising. The Pre-Health Advisor will: assist students and refer them to the appropriate academic and non academic resources of the university to secure an engaging and productive start to their college years; work with students one-on-one, in small groups, and in classroom settings to provide academic support; meet with all first-year advisees at least twice each semester to review college transition issues, general academic policies and degree requirements; develop outreach strategies for second-year advisees to ensure engagement and retention; provide intensive, structured, and ongoing academic advising for pre-health students in advising tracks for Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Radiation Science and Clinical Lab Science and graduate and professional programs to include Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Dentistry, Optometry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Sciences; other academic advising and Pre-Health duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a graduate degree, or education and experience that equates to a graduate degree. A master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related area is preferred. Professional experience in a college or university setting as well as experience in academic advising, mentoring, or a student retention program is greatly preferred. Familiarity with the mission of an urban research university and experience working with a diverse student population of varying abilities is required. Excellent problem solving, interpersonal and organizational skills are required. Understanding of student development theory is essential. Experience and comfort with contacting students via telephone and email to establish relationships and to encourage them to utilize services is vital. Experience working in a high-volume office that offers exceptional customer service is preferred. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU required.
