The Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics (PMB), Division of Health Services Administration, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Associate or Full Professor (tenure eligible track). The Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics, one of the nation's largest, is comprised of six divisions, two medical residency programs, more than 65 full-time faculty members, and over 200 additional adjunct faculty members engaged in a wide variety of research projects relevant to public health. The individual selected for this position will serve as the Director of the Division of Health Services and Policy in PMB. The Department has recently established the degree program for a Master in Health Administration and Policy, for which it is actively seeking accreditation. In addition to responsibility for this new program, the Division is responsible for curriculum in health services administration and policy in support of medical education and various other public health graduate degrees offered by PMB.
The incumbent will also be responsible for leading the research activities of HSA, with a strong focus on quality and innovation in the military health system. The incumbent and HSA will also work closely with a unique, interdisciplinary Military Health System Innovation Cell that is being established in the School of Medicine.
Duties: The incumbent will serve as an Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics (PMB), Division of Health Services Administration and will be responsible for teaching, research, patient care (if a clinician), and major administrative assignments. In conjunction with other faculty members of the department, participates in the planning and development of curriculum in a manner so as to integrate student's knowledge of the principles of health services administration, policy, and research, and that supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the Department. Participates in the development and organization of specific courses of study which provide practical experience in learning fundamentals of preventive medicine and public health.
The incumbent will teach, supervise, and mentor graduate and medical students, interns, and residents; serve as an advisor to medical, masters and doctoral students in the area of public health and preventive medicine; provide guidance to students in their perspective training programs, and prepare and present lectures in area of major expertise to graduate and medical students. He/she will serve as an academic leader in the Department, leading major educational activities, teaching, conducting research and providing services to the Department, School, and University. Additional duties include, serving as a technical consultant to military operational and medical communities in specific areas of expertise; working effectively with both operational tri-service military representatives and faculty from various departments, clinical and/or basic sciences, within USUHS; and collaborating with officials from local, county, state, national, or international public health organizations, as well as other federal agencies.
Qualifications Requirements: The incumbent must possess a minimum of a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in a health care administration and evaluation related field, with substantial knowledge and experience in health services administration and policy principles, practices, education, and research. Individuals must have extensive experience in medical school teaching, educational administration, personnel management, research and development, expertise and experience as reflected by a significant number of scientific publications in critically reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to his/her research, and possess active membership in scholarly societies appropriate to the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics. The clinical role of this position must be supported by a license to practice medicine and certification from the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Experience with curriculum development, review, and evaluation is desirable. Exceptionally strong communication and presentation skills, both written and oral, are essential. The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level in accordance with USUHS academic guidelines.
