This position is no longer an active posting on HigherEdJobsThe Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for one faculty position to start in the Fall of 2010. This position is pending budget approval.
For applicants at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure-track), preference will be given to those with research expertise in soft tissue biomechanics with possible cardiovascular, orthopedic, regenerative medicine or cancer applications. Required qualifications for the position include a doctorate in biomedical engineering or a closely related field, potential to establish an outstanding, extramurally-supported research program and promise for excellence in teaching. Responsibilities for the position will include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, development of new courses, and service to the department, college, and University.
For applicants at the rank of Professor with tenure, the area of research is open, but the successful candidate must demonstrate an ongoing interest in teaching and research and have experience in developing an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in biomedical engineering or related engineering discipline. Required qualifications for the position include a doctorate in biomedical engineering or a closely related field, an established, extramurally-funded research program and excellence in teaching. Responsibilities for the position will include research, curriculum development and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentoring graduate students, and service to the department, college, and University.
The BME Department participates in the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering between UTSA and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The joint program currently offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees; an undergraduate program is being developed. As of August, 2009, there were 30 Core and 29 Aassociated faculty in the BME Program with ongoing research in the areas of biomaterials, biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, biosensors, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. Funding of faculty research has averaged $20 million/year since the Program's inception in 2003. San Antonio is centrally located in South Central Texas and enjoys a mild climate and low cost of living. The metropolitan area is a hub for both the medical and bioscience industries and is home to Brooke Army Medical Center, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Southwest Research Institute, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, and a number of biotech companies. Many faculty in the BME Program and staff at these organizations are actively engaged in collaborative projects of mutual interest.
