Job Description: Position performs a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical, electrical, and chilled water systems and equipment. Work ranges from inspection, service, repair and troubleshooting to analyzing highly complex control, electrical and mechanical systems and equipment using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; to include calibrating, tuning, and operating said system and equipment. Standard operational guidelines, system safety procedures, vendor manuals and manufacturer publications and bulletins are normally established and employees apply technical knowledge and skills, occasionally modifying standard practice and procedures due to unusual situations. Positions must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments. The primary duties and responsibilities of this position are to serve as a HVAC Technician. This individual will respond to, investigate, and repair complex problems with chillers and refrigeration systems, including electrical, pneumatic, and electronic controls. The position performs maintenance repairs and troubleshooting on centrifugal chillers up to 1,500 tons. The position performs routine daily checks on all control and safety devices on chillers, reviews critical pressures and temperatures, and makes necessary adjustment to the machine to ensure proper and safe operation. The position performs maintenance and repairs to domestic and commercial refrigeration equipment, water coolers, window A/C units, refrigerated centrifuges, ice machines, walk-in coolers, and other similar items. Performs work on auxiliary equipment such as cooling towers, pumps, piping and compressors, including repairs ranging from minor repairs to major maintenance on these items by repairing or replacing motors, shafts, impellers, gaskets, seals, couplings, sheaves, bearings, belts. The position is responsible for all maintenance, repair, adjustment and replacement of pneumatic, electric, and electro~ control systems that control HVAC equipment. These controls range from wall thermostats to electronic chiller controls, and include all controls to operate the air handling units, pumps, cooling towers, adjustable louvers, chillers, and related equipment. When a failure occurs, the position evaluates the trouble and performs the repairs to bring the unit back on line as quickly as possible. Procures material for HVAC projects using blue prints, manufacturers' manuals and specifications to ensure adherence to the construction/installation schedule, and reports scheduling problems to the HVAC supervisor. Operates the BAS computer during load management operations, shedding loads, and making operational changes to maximize the savings. Other primary duties and responsibilities include assists HVAC mechanics, trades workers, and maintenance workers according to experience and training; reviews work in process for adherence to standards and schedule; performs preventive maintenance; and completes corrective maintenance work orders as assigned. This person is assigned to the HVAC supervisor, responsible for campus HVAC operations.
This job is Monday through Friday 8-5, with 24 hour on call work required. This person is assigned to the HVAC supervisor responsible for Health Science Campus HVAC operations.

Preferred candidate will have High School Diploma, Associate's Degree in Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration or five years of progressive experience as an HVAC service technician, universal EPA certification, a valid NC driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Special Instructions to Applicants: This position is subject to the Career Banding Salary Administration Plan. If candidates are not identified at the Journey level, management may consider candidates at a lower competency level. Pay will be commensurate with applicant's competencies as well as budget, equity, and market considerations.
Salary Grade Equivalent: 65 (for reduction-in-force priority purposes only)
