The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), invites applications or nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is one of five departments in the College of Engineering with approximately 520 undergraduate students, 40 graduate students, and 12 faculty members with tenured or tenure-track appointments, 1 full-time instructor, and 4 research faculty members. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and is currently nationally ranked (2012 US News & World Report) and is accredited by the ABET. Over the last seven years, the Department has had averaged approximately $2.0 million/year in research expenditures and has placed emphasis on pursuing nationally competitive grants, publishing in reputable journals, increasing its Doctoral program, and enhancing its collaboration with industry. The Department seeks candidates with a clear vision for the future of research and engineering education, leadership in global competitiveness, effective interpersonal and managerial skills, and a high interest in cross-disciplinary cooperation and industry/university relations.

The successful candidate for the position must hold an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or closely related fields. The candidate must have a proven record of professional and academic leadership, a distinguished national and international reputation in research, significant experience in undergraduate and graduate education, and qualifications consistent with a tenure appointment at the rank of full professor. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active sponsored research program and work with the faculty to develop and implement a research-oriented strategic plan.
