Synopsis of Role:
The AVP and Dean, School of Management will be responsible for leading and building an American Public University System (APUS) School of Management hinged on academic excellence and commitment to learning outcomes, assessment, and continuous improvement of the entire system. This position will demand a commitment to establishing APUS as the recognized leader in online education in Management and as a provider of programs to the highest standards of academic excellence.
The AVP and Dean, School of Management will shape and articulate a vision, a short and a long-range plan for the School's growth consistent within the established enrollment goals, mission, and strategic plan of the University. The incumbent will assess the programs, faculty, and staff within the School of Management with an eye to strengthening the programs with appropriate accreditation and recognition from the Board of Trustees, Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of North Central Association, and Management program accrediting bodies. The AVP and Dean, School of Management will serve as the subject matter expert in the assigned area of expertise; foster relationships with government, business, and community agencies, industries, and institutions; and promote the department's image to the profession, other academic institutions, and the community.
The incumbent will develop and maintain a structure that promotes and supports collegiality within the School of Management and support a collegial environment across all schools and departments of the University to analyze and resolve concerns and issues. The Dean will interact with various departments throughout the University, including Admissions, Advising, Marketing, Human Resources, Instructional Design, Institutional Research, etc. and is able to communicate effectively to promote quality, growth, and retention within the School of Management. The Dean will also lead retention initiatives in the School of Management to ensure the School is focused on student success. This position will oversee the Program Directors in the School and collaborate with the Vice President, Faculty Management in the management of School of Management faculty to provide leadership to the School. The incumbent will also be responsible for quality assurance of existing programs, development of new programs, and working with program directors to ensure courses are scheduled and that faculty members satisfactorily complete teaching responsibilities, including the following:
- Encouraging faculty to maintain high academic standards.
- Seeking to insure that professional, HLC, and APUS standards of academic excellence and program and industry accreditation and certification requirements are met regarding online learning.
- Ensuring programs and courses meet APUS standards for curriculum excellence.
- Creating synergy among and between the Program Directors, Faculty Directors, and faculty in the School of Management.
- Ensuring the use of the electronic classroom and a high level of faculty and student interaction.
- Supporting scholarly work and development of faculty as professionals and as teachers.
The Dean will oversee the recruitment, selection, and orientation of program directors and faculty, review faculty evaluations, and recommend faculty for appointment, reappointment, and non-reappointment. The incumbent will conduct accurate appraisals of Programs Directors and is responsible for integrating new staff in the School of Management into the APUS's culture.
The Dean will be actively involved in the evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning and ensuring student learning outcomes are met in the department as a whole, which fosters an atmosphere in which critical academic thought and currency in the discipline flourish. The Dean will be responsible for keeping program directors in the School of Management informed of relevant departmental policies, procedures, goals, initiatives, and plans. The Dean will be an active member of the Provost Council and Academic Leadership of the University and as such, will collaborate with and maintain strong working relationships with the other Deans as well as other areas within the University, including Academic Operation, Marketing, Information Technology, and Student Services and will provide an atmosphere conducive to the development and maintenance of good morale and collegiality. The incumbent will work with the Provost to develop and manage the department budget in order to obtain the resources necessary for the faculty and the department to fulfill responsibilities in curriculum quality, outreach, teaching, and learning and to provide a pleasant, professional environment in which to do so.
- Serves as a School of Management subject or discipline area expert.
- Envisions and designs the overall program and curriculum for the School of Management.
- Establishes and implements standards unique to Management programs.
- Remains abreast of industry trends and benchmarks APUS's School of Management programs to ensure the highest standards are being maintained.
- Leads program review process in the School of Management.
- Creates and participates in Industry Advisory Councils for programs and disciplines.
- Recruits, selects, manages, and evaluates Program Directors, Faculty Directors, and Faculty for the School of Management.
- Supports orientation and training for new and potential staff members within the School of Management.
- Leads the implementation and review of APUS learning outcomes standards and assessment in the School.
- Recommend new learning technologies for the APUS School of Management programs.
- Recommends and incorporates best online learning practices and pedagogy in School of Management classes and programs.
- Complies with accreditation requirements to ensure accreditation of School of Management programs.
- Maintains voting member status on the School of Management Curriculum Committee.
- Serves as an active and collaborative member of the Provost Council.
- Maintains school metrics and conducts data analysis.
- Monitors program goals and accuracy of degree paths.
- Supports special programs.
- Participates in Deans meeting and convenes School Program Director meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Standard office environment in Charles Town, WV.
- Some travel required.
- Commuting between APUS and commercial vendor offices may be required.
- Strong professional knowledge and demonstrated leadership in educating Management professionals.
- Online education experience.
- Experience with accreditation of Management schools.
- Experience working with accreditation of Management programs.
- Working, technical knowledge of Internet, Web technologies, and electronic classroom platforms.
- Knowledge of needs assessment and analysis, research, and benchmarking,
- Vision and dedication to establishing online education of excellence for adult learners, with a strong results orientation needed to implement systems and procedures to make this vision a reality.
- Strong oral, written, organizational, and presentation skills; proven record of effective team building and relationship building.
- Ability to meet critical and short notice delivery deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and on various committees.
- Strong skills as an educator and entrepreneur, especially in building models and strategic planning.
- Detailed, working knowledge of the inner workings of an online university system, curriculum development, and electronic classroom platforms.
- Experience with retention initiatives driving student persistence and success.
- Ability to interact with external and internal constituents of APUS at all levels, to include, but not limited to: senior APUS officials, commercial vendors, and various government officials and business executives
- Exceptional problem solving and decision making ability with commitment to customer service.
- Flexibility regarding dealing with new and innovative situations.
- Doctorate degree required in an area of Management or related discipline with significant experience, training, and education in the areas of Instructional Design, Educational Leadership, Instructional or Educational Technology, and/or Communications.
- Minimum seven years' experience actively working as a professor or department chair at the University level OR eight years' experience in an educational, corporate training, or professional services environment, with an emphasis on e-learning and multimedia technologies OR minimum three years' of experience managing an education or development function.
- Proven experience in leading and managing programs.
