Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year's experience conducting ethnographic research in school or university settings, with college-aged populations, or with marginalized youth or young adults in the U.S. Experience conducting semi-structured observations, participant observation, semi- and unstructured interviews, photoethnography, and/or community mapping methods desired. Previous experience with team research, Dedoose, and comparative ethnography would be beneficial. Strong analytic and writing skills necessary.


Minimum of six months professional or educational conducting qualitative research with young people and/or in schools; one year or more experience strongly preferred. Experience conducting observations, participant observation, semi- and unstructured interviews, photoethnography, and/or community mapping methods desired. Strong analytic and organizational skills required. Previous experience with team research, Dedoose, and comparative ethnography would be beneficial. Experience with or strong interest in U.S. higher education and issues of equity are desirable.

Principal duties:
This study will examine how low-income students in four diverse public four-year colleges in Wisconsin conceptualize college affordability, and how, in turn, these conceptualizations impact their decisions about whether or not to continue in college after their first year. One full-time ethnographer will be based in each of the four college institutions for a 15-month period. The ethnographers will conduct a six-month ethnography of the institution and its engagement with low-income students, and will then conduct interviews, observations, photoethnography and community mapping activities with 15 select low-income students on their campus. Student activities will be conduced in the second semester of students, first year of college, over the summer, and in the first semester of the students' second year of college. The position will require the researcher to live in the town in which the college is located. Limited funding will be available for moving and professional expenses related to the relocation. Duties for the position include:

  • institutional ethnography (months 1-6): observations, participant observations, semi-structured interviews with administrators and leaders, document reviews
  • student-focused ethnography (months 7-15): creating rapport, observations/shadowing, participant observation, semi- and unstructured interviews, photoethnography, community mapping activities
  • across all ethnographic activities: review and comment on the conceptual framework and research design, help in the preparation and revision of research protocols, jointly construct the data management plan , collect and manage data, writing up field notes and memos, participating in regular group meetings and occasional workshops among all team members, participating in single-site and comparative data analysis, participate in preparation of cross-site manuscripts, and lead in preparation of single-site manuscripts in collaboration with PIs.
